JOB SATISFACTION IN RELATION TO GENDER AND TEACHING SUBJECTS OF SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS

Abstract

The teacher in the developing Indian society has a very fundamental role in the social reconstruction and in the transmission of wisdom, knowledge and experiences of one generation to another. Children are the potential wealth of a nation. They are always exposed to the useful information by the teacher. It is therefore, necessary to realize that the emerging Indian society can achieve all round development with the help of the teacher who acts as a powerful agency in transmitting its cherished values. A teacher is not only a custodian of a nation’s old values but is also an architect par excellence of new values. But due to changing dynamics of the Indian education system, the teachers are found to be dissatisfied with their jobs. For effective and progressive teaching learning process, teachers need to be in love with their profession, they need to be satisfied with their jobs. In the present investigation an attempt was made to study the job satisfaction level of a sample of 200 secondary school teachers of Amritsar district with respect to their gender (male and female) and their teaching subjects (sciences and languages). Dr. Meera Dixit’s job satisfaction scale was used to gather information about perception of job satisfaction and descriptive analysis was done using mean, standard deviations, t-test and ANOVA. The results reveal that there exist significant differences in the mean scores of job satisfaction of secondary school teachers on the basis of their gender and their teaching subject. Further the female secondary school teachers and the teachers teaching languages found to be more satisfied with their jobs as compared to their other counterparts. The results also validate the significant interaction effect of gender and teaching subject on job satisfaction of secondary school teachers.
