Abstract

Religion has played an immense role in sculpting civilization throughout history. It is also a topic of lot of controversies and debate, but it also plays an important role in the life of an individual. In general when people speak about religion, whether they realize it or not are speaking specifically about religion in the sense of major or organized form of religion. In the West the first that usually comes to mind is Christianity, however in order to grasp the fullness of the phenomenon of religion it must be stressed that these organized form of religion is but a part of the larger concept. The reason this needs to be stressed is that all to often people cast judgment on religion as a whole based on their opinion of the major organized religion. If these views are negative they will sometimes write off religion as something of little or no value. So it must be remembered that throughout history and to the present day there have been thousands of religions practiced by small groups of people and even personal religions with little to no formal organization. Another idea that comes too often is belief in a God or Gods. This is not surprising because as the majority of the major religions in history has worshiped at least one God. However this should not be seen as a defining essence of religion as not all religions adhere to belief in supernatural being, which will be discussed in the latter part.

But what exactly is religion and how can we realize its inner realities and ideas? This needs to be understood that peace can be achieved only when people will turn to their righteous ways as preached in the religious scriptures and respect all the religions of the world.
